What are POS Systems?

POS means Point of Sale.

This can mean as the commodities offered for sale, displays and business transactions.

In our case, we’re talking about the POS software and hardware that runs the front counter and back office operations of a business.

For a small card shop, a basic POS system would consist of a computer, cash register (can have a built-in cash drawer), receipt printer and the appropriate POS software. For a service organization, like a lawn care company, wouldn’t need be a cash drawer or a receipt printer.

Although, they might want a laser printer for their service invoices.

Again, you have the flexibility to easily customize a POS system for your particular business.

Remember that the central nerve of your retail POS system is the computer that runs your POS software.

Of course, we do understand that there’s a temptation of using older computers or even the low cost ones that can be bought at “superstores”.

But always remember, once up and running, your business will be depending on these cheap equipments, so a good quality computer is important.

All custom built-systems use high quality, branded parts you can count on it for many years!

This also goes for all the other POS components.

Your basic cash drawer may be able to do the job, but heavy duty models are built much better and can last longer.

For a barcode scanner, a CCD type lasts longer than the pencil want type, but both are still designed to work with flat, easy to read barcodes.

About laser scanners, they not only have a greater range, but they can also scan barcodes on wrap around bottles, plastic bags or follow irregular shapes which is way better than the CCD models.

While barcode technology is improving, so is the printer technology. The workhorse of the industry is used to be a dot-matrix printer, and they’re still fairly popular, but thermal printers are faster, quieter and reasonably priced.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS’s), or battery back-ups, are affordable and can keep you up and running during short outages and power glitches. Remember, you will be depending on this equipment. If you’re going to be using it a lot, don’t hesitate to spend some extra bucks to purchase the heavy duty UPS models and units.

Keep in mind that your retail point of sale system cannot only provide you over all control of your business, it also puts a wealth of info at the tip of your fingers.

Imagine being able to compare year to date and month to date sales transactions with just a few keys. A database of your customers can be a powerful marketing tool.

A POS system can also track your inventory, automatically creating order lists as needed, even adjusting quantities for seasonal demand.

To sum it all, a POS system helps you keep a constant eye on your bottom line.
